Neither Liberty Nor Safety

I recently posted two stories to my blog this week. The first one was about the report from The NY Times that said 1/100 Americans were in jail in 2007. The second one from Reuters was about how Bush is trying to prevent telecommunication companies from being sued for helping to spy on American citizens. These two stories are more similar than you think, and should raise the important questions. What does our government want? Why are they invading our privacy? Why are they criminalizing everyone? What happened to our rights?

I am afraid we created a snow ball effect of overbearing big government after 9/11. Most of us thought we were protecting ourselves when in fact we were oppressing ourselves. We went against the philosophy that Ben Franklin taught us 250 years ago–
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Its never too late to stop this.
